Central Alberta

Creative production across Central Alberta.

Central Alberta — Red Deer and Sylvan Lake. A river city in the Red Deer River's bowl and a resort town on a 42.8 km² lake, about 20 km apart on Highway 11, so one trip can carry a brand film in the valley and a lakefront shoot by evening. The corridor sits 110–118 minutes north of the Calgary base: a day trip in summer, an overnight in winter.

Aerial work across Central Alberta

Film and photography are unaffected by airspace, and Atom2Adam — a global consultancy and media agency that operates from Calgary — can be commissioned throughout the corridor. For aerial work, the airspace governs. Red Deer straddles the edge of the 5 NM Class D control zone around Red Deer Regional Airport (CYQF): Westerner Park, Red Deer Polytechnic and Gasoline Alley sit inside it on the published geometry and downtown sits just outside, while Sylvan Lake is uncontrolled Class G about 10.8 km beyond the zone. Authorisation status is confirmed per address against NAV Drone before every flight.

What that means in practice.

2 locations in this corridor are covered by the agency under the standard RPAS rules. For aerial work, 1 of them sits in controlled airspace requiring a NAV CANADA authorisation, and 1 does not. The boundary does not follow town limits, which is why status is resolved from the address rather than the postcode.

Aerodromes in play. Red Deer Regional Airport (CYQF), Red Deer/Truant South aerodrome (CRD6). Each has a circuit that is plotted before any aerial work nearby, because uncontrolled airspace is not the same thing as unoccupied airspace.

Mobilisation. Between 1.8 hours and 2 hours from the Calgary base, depending on the location. The nearer locations sit within a single day's shoot; the furthest are scheduled against the light and the weather window rather than the drive. It is quoted separately from the fee, so the scope for a project here is stated in full before anything is booked.

Conditions across the corridor.

Red Deer

The Red Deer River valley holds the city in a bowl: NAV CANADA's weather manual describes Red Deer as sitting in a bowl-like depression within the valley. The river flats downtown lie near 860 m and the upland rises about 75–80 m within 7–8 km east and west, while the south end around Westerner Park sits about 30 m above the core. More than 110 km of Waskasoo Park trail follow the valley through the city.

Wind follows the valley: NAV CANADA's weather manual says it is generally from the northwest or south all year, and Environment and Climate Change Canada's 1991–2020 normals put the mean at 11.0 km/h, windiest in April and May (13.2–13.6 km/h) and calmest in August (9.4 km/h). Chinooks are common in the Red Deer–Calgary region, and thunderstorm cells that form over the foothills in the morning frequently move through Red Deer later in the day.

Sylvan Lake

Sylvan Lake covers 42.8 km² and reaches 18.3 m deep, with the town on its south-east edge and sandstone banks rising up to 20 m above the water along the north-east shore. About 90% of the watershed has been converted to farmland, so from altitude the lake sits inside a patchwork of fields. The public beach runs from 52 Street to 34 Street, about an hour's walk, past the marina, the pier and the patios of Lakeshore Drive.

Environment and Climate Change Canada's 1991–2020 normals at Red Deer Regional Airport, about 20 km south-east, put the mean wind at 11.0 km/h, windiest in May (13.6 km/h) and calmest in August (9.4 km/h), most often from the south. Visit Sylvan Lake warns that winds over the lake can change quickly, and calm water is likeliest before 9 a.m. — the hour a glass-flat lake shot is planned for.

What we make for Central Alberta.

Every subject is approached the same way — creative direction, film, photography, aerial and post-production, scoped and quoted before anything is booked.

Locations in Central Alberta.

Central Alberta questions, answered.

Does Atom2Adam work across Central Alberta?

Yes. Atom2Adam, a global consultancy and media agency that operates from Calgary, makes film, photography and aerial cinematography across Central Alberta — 2 locations covered from the Calgary base, each with its own page. Aerial work flies with authorisation where the address requires it. Every project is scoped and quoted before anything is booked.

Do you need airspace authorisation across Central Alberta?

It varies within the corridor. 1 of the 2 locations covered here sits in controlled airspace where aerial work requires a NAV CANADA authorisation, and 1 does not. Status is confirmed per address before a shoot is scoped, never assumed from the town name. Film and photography are unaffected either way.

How far is Central Alberta from the agency's base?

Between 1.8 hours and 2 hours from the Calgary base, depending on the location. The nearer locations sit within a single day's shoot; the furthest are scheduled against the light and the weather window rather than the drive. Mobilisation is quoted separately from the fee.

What kinds of subject does Central Alberta call for?

The corridor is made for hospitality and tourism, cafés, restaurants and shops, places and landmarks. The subject shapes the shoot: hospitality needs the arrival, the room and the landscape it sits in, and a café or a restaurant needs its room, its table and its pace. Each project is scoped against a written brief.
