We decide how something should be seen before deciding what to make.

Every commission begins as a consultancy. Before a camera is chosen, the question is what the audience should feel, what the position is, and what not to make. That judgment is the first deliverable, and it is delivered anywhere — a brand in another time zone receives the same direction as one across the city.

Does Atom2Adam offer consultancy and creative direction?

Yes. Consultancy and creative direction is the first of five capabilities at Atom2Adam, a global creative consultancy and media agency operating from Calgary, Canada. It covers visual strategy, brand and campaign strategy, concept development, art direction, content architecture, shot and location planning and pre-production — decided before any production begins, and delivered remotely to clients in any time zone. The other four capabilities, film, photography, aerial and post-production, make what the consultancy decides.

What it decides. What it makes.

The judgment first, then the work that follows from it.

Decides

  • The audience, and what it should feel
  • The position — what this place or brand is, against everything beside it
  • The mood, the light, the colour language and the references
  • The story and the movement — what the camera does, and why
  • What not to make
  • The content architecture — which assets exist, for which screen, in what order

Makes

  • A written creative direction the whole commission is produced against
  • Visual strategy, and brand and campaign strategy
  • Concept development and art direction
  • Content architecture — an asset system, not a list of files
  • Shot planning and location planning
  • Pre-production: the schedule, the light windows, the references, the permissions

The craft.

What separates a good version of this work from a bad one.

  1. 01

The direction is written before the day is booked

A shoot day is expensive and a light window is short. When the audience, the position, the references and the shot list are decided on paper first, the day on location is spent making the work that was already decided rather than discovering what the work is.

  2. 02

Restraint is a decision, not an absence

A brief can arrive as a list of everything that could be shown. The consultancy's first job is to remove — the angle that says nothing, the second location that dilutes the first, the format nobody will watch — until what remains is the argument.

  3. 03

References are precise or they are noise

Cinematic and luxury are not directions. A reference is a specific frame, a specific quality of light, a specific pace of cut. The direction names them, so that everyone on the commission is making the same thing.

  4. 04

    The system outlives the shoot

A direction sets the colour language, the crop logic and the rhythm every future asset follows, so a campaign shot next season sits beside this one as one visual world rather than a new look.

Inside a commission.

The consultancy is where a commission begins and the standard the other four capabilities produce against. It needs no flight: direction, strategy, references and the plan are delivered remotely to any time zone, and a client pays for travel only when a camera has to be on the ground. On a full commission it becomes the creative fee — concept, direction and pre-production — and it carries through the edit, the grade and the delivery, so that the final file still answers the first decision.

Questions, answered.

Can Atom2Adam consult without producing the work?

Yes. The consultancy stands on its own: a written creative direction, the visual strategy, the references, the content architecture and a shot plan that a client's own team or another crew can produce against. When the production is commissioned as well, the same point of view carries from the first reference to the final file — but the judgment is a deliverable in itself.

How is creative direction delivered to a client outside Canada?

Remotely, in the client's time zone. The consultancy is a conversation and a document: discovery calls, a written direction, references, a content architecture and a plan. None of it needs a camera on the ground, so a brand in another country receives the same direction as one in Calgary. If production follows, the crew travels on a client-funded basis.

What does a creative direction actually contain?

The audience and what it should feel; the position; the mood, the light and the colour language; the story and the movement of the camera; specific references; the content architecture — every asset, its screen and its purpose; the shot list and the locations; and what has deliberately been left out. It is short enough to be read in one sitting and specific enough that two people would make the same film from it.
