Southern Alberta
Creative production across Southern Alberta.
Southern Alberta — Lethbridge and Medicine Hat. Two river-valley cities about 160 km apart: the Oldman River coulees under Lethbridge's High Level Bridge, and the South Saskatchewan cutbanks below Medicine Hat's Historic Clay District. Both sit inside airport control zones and both lost scheduled passenger flights in June 2026, so a shoot here is a road trip from the Calgary base with an overnight.
Aerial work across Southern Alberta
Film and photography are unaffected by airspace, and Atom2Adam — a creative consultancy and media agency, commissioned worldwide and operating from Calgary — can be commissioned throughout the corridor. For aerial work, the airspace governs. Both cities lie inside 5 NM Class E control zones charted without control towers — Lethbridge (CYQL) over its downtown, river valley and university, Medicine Hat (CYXH) over nearly the whole city — so nearly every flight needs a NAV CANADA authorisation requested through NAV Drone. Hospital heliports sit within 2 km of both downtowns, and CFB Suffield's Class F restricted airspace begins about 20 km north of Medicine Hat; each site is confirmed against NAV Drone before every flight.
What that means in practice.
2 locations in this corridor are covered by the agency under the standard RPAS rules. All of them sit in controlled airspace, so for aerial work an Advanced RPAS certificate is the entry requirement here rather than a credential worth mentioning. Film and photography are unaffected.
Aerodromes in play. Lethbridge Airport (CYQL), Medicine Hat Regional Airport (CYXH). Each has a circuit that is plotted before any aerial work nearby, because uncontrolled airspace is not the same thing as unoccupied airspace.
Mobilisation. Between 2.5 hours and 3.2 hours from the Calgary base, depending on the location. The nearer locations sit within a single day's shoot; the furthest are scheduled against the light and the weather window rather than the drive. It is quoted separately from the fee, so the scope for a project here is stated in full before anything is booked.
Conditions across the corridor.
Lethbridge
The Oldman River meanders through the centre of Lethbridge and divides it east from west, and the CPR's High Level Bridge spans its valley at more than 1,600 m long and 95 m high, a measure of how deep the coulees cut below the prairie. Cottonwoods form a dense canopy on the valley floor — the City counts it among the few places in the world where three cottonwood species grow — and more than 100 km of trail wind through the valley. Beyond the rim, nearly one million irrigated acres surround the city.
Environment and Climate Change Canada's 1981–2010 normals at Lethbridge Airport put the mean wind at 18.3 km/h, most often from the west in every month, and strongest in December and January (20.5–20.8 km/h). The 1971–2000 record counts 80 days a year with winds of 52 km/h or more, and The Canadian Encyclopedia notes that one in three winter days in southwestern Alberta is a chinook day, so a Lethbridge booking carries a weather-day buffer.
Medicine Hat
The South Saskatchewan River valley shapes Medicine Hat, and Seven Persons Creek and Ross Creek join it inside the city, cutting cliffs and finger coulees through the neighbourhoods. North of downtown the cutbank rises about 50 m within roughly 0.7 km, from a valley floor near 660 m to benches above 700 m, and beyond the rim the short-grass prairie of Palliser's Triangle runs flat to slightly rolling. The City's Heritage Trail Network covers about 190 km and links nine major parks.
Environment and Climate Change Canada's 1981–2010 normals at the airport put the mean wind at 13.5 km/h, from the southwest in every month — windiest in April and May (15.1 km/h), calmest in August (11.6 km/h), with 12 days a year at 52 km/h or more. Chinooks soften the winter cold, but wind chill still falls below −20 on about 43 days a year, which shortens battery and crew time outdoors.

Southern Alberta questions, answered.
Does Atom2Adam work across Southern Alberta?
Yes. Atom2Adam, a global creative consultancy and media agency whose operating base is Calgary, makes film, photography and aerial cinematography across Southern Alberta — 2 locations covered from the Calgary base, each with its own page. Aerial work here flies with airspace authorisation in hand. Every project is scoped and quoted before anything is booked.
Do you need airspace authorisation across Southern Alberta?
Yes, for aerial work, across the corridor. Every location covered in Southern Alberta sits in controlled airspace, so aerial cinematography flies under an Advanced RPAS certificate with a NAV CANADA authorisation filed before the shoot date is confirmed. Film and photography on the ground are unaffected.
How far is Southern Alberta from the agency's base?
Between 2.5 hours and 3.2 hours from the Calgary base, depending on the location. The nearer locations sit within a single day's shoot; the furthest are scheduled against the light and the weather window rather than the drive. Mobilisation is quoted separately from the fee.
What kinds of subject does Southern Alberta call for?
The corridor is made for farms and ranch land, brand and campaign films, places and landmarks. The subject shapes the shoot: farm and ranch land reads from directly overhead, where the section lines are, and a brand film needs the work itself, filmed as it happens. Each project is scoped against a written brief.
