A resort town that sells to Alberta.

Golden sits in the Rocky Mountain Trench at the confluence of the Columbia and Kicking Horse rivers, with the Dogtooth Range of the Purcells on one side and the Rockies on the other. The Town calls tourism its leading economic pillar and forestry central to its industry. Its January 2026 community profile counts 624,170 overnight visitors in 2023 — 43% from Alberta and 37% from British Columbia.

Kicking Horse Mountain Resort, 6.4 km west of town, belongs to Resorts of the Canadian Rockies, which is headquartered in Calgary. The resort lists 1,315 m of vertical and an average snowfall of 7.3 m, and the restaurant at the top of its gondola is, by the resort's account, the highest in Canada. Tourism Golden counts three heli-ski operators and one cat-ski operator in town, and says heli-skiing was born in Golden's backyard, in the Bugaboos.

Golden also builds in wood. The Kicking Horse Pedestrian Bridge downtown spans 46 m and is, in Tourism Golden's words, the longest freestanding timber-frame bridge in Canada; Edelweiss Village, six chalets finished in 1912 for the town's Swiss mountain guides, still stands. Timber frame, chalets and new lodges are architecture subjects in their own right.

What Golden asks for first.

  1. 02The lodge, not only the line. A ski or river film shows the terrain; a hospitality film shows the place a guest books — the lodge, the room, the guide, the table after a day out. Golden's heli-ski, cat-ski and rafting businesses sell both, and the second is made for the guest still deciding — hospitality and brand films.
  2. 04Aerial, where it is lawful. The town, the valley floor and private land with written permission can be flown; Yoho, Glacier, Kootenay and Banff national parks cannot, and Kicking Horse Mountain Resort permits no personal drones inside its boundary. Golden Municipal Airport's helicopters, skydivers and wildfire base, and Mount 7's paragliders, share the valley's sky — aerial cinematography under Transport Canada rules.
  3. 03Timber, rooms and ridgelines. Timber-frame homes and lodges, chalet interiors and the view from the deck. The Town's housing report counted 157 short-term rental listings in 2025, up from 54 in 2016 — each one sold by its photographs. See architecture and interiors photography.
  4. 01Permissions before pictures. Business use of the Town's public property runs through a Temporary Licence of Occupation that can take up to two weeks; the resort, the Skybridge and the lodges are private land; the parks are closed to drones. The consultancy maps all of it before the drive from Calgary — the first part of every commission's creative direction.
  5. 05Cut for the booking page. Edit, colour, sound and finishing at the studio turn one shoot into the hero film, the short cuts and the stills a lodge or resort sells with all season, delivered digitally. The craft is post-production and finishing.

Commissions Golden supports.

These come from what the town's economy is built on — snow, rivers, timber and visitors — not from a list of past clients.

  • Resorts and attractions

Winter and summer campaigns for the gondola, the summit restaurant and the Skybridge side of town, each made with its owner's permission.

  • Heli-ski and cat-ski lodges

Lodge, guest and hospitality films for operators who sell a week in the mountains rather than a single run.

  • Rafting and adventure brands

The Kicking Horse River runs commercial trips from mid-May to mid-September, with its highest water in June and early July (Tourism Golden).

  • Timber-frame architecture

Homes, lodges and public structures photographed for builders, architects and owners, in a town that raised Canada's longest freestanding timber-frame bridge.

  • Short-term rentals

Listing sets for a market whose reported listings nearly tripled between 2016 and 2025.

  • Tourism and the town

Seasonal stills and film for a Resort Municipality, designated in 2007, whose visitors come mostly from Alberta.

Over the canopy, toward the summits.

Nearly thirty-three seconds from Mountain and Forest, made at Radium Hot Springs, 98 km south-east: the camera drifts at half speed over unbroken conifer canopy, cloud caught halfway up a grey rock buttress, until the valley opens into blue distance. It is the language of a mountain-lodge or resort film, shown as the studio's work at Radium rather than as Golden.

Planning a Golden shoot.

Getting there. Tourism Golden puts the town 278 km and about 2 h 44 min from Calgary International Airport, by the Trans-Canada through Banff and Yoho national parks; the highway runs 45 km through the centre of Yoho. The Kicking Horse Canyon section east of town has been four-lane since 31 July 2024. Golden's own airport takes private and charter aircraft only.

Seasons and light. Kicking Horse's 2025/26 season ran 12 December to 12 April. Tourism Golden puts peak larch colour in the last two weeks of September and rafting from mid-May to mid-September. Daylight runs from about 7 h 51 min at the December solstice to 16 h 36 min in June, and the valley walls take some of it.

Airspace. Golden Municipal Airport, at the edge of town, is home to two helicopter operators, a skydiving organisation, search and rescue and a wildfire suppression base; the hospital heliport is in town; Mount 7 launches paragliders and hang gliders 1,219 m above the valley floor. Each site is checked against them and against Transport Canada's rules before a date is confirmed.

Parks. Yoho and Glacier national parks are each under 30 minutes away by Tourism Golden's count, and taking off or landing a drone in a national park is prohibited, with fines up to $25,000. BC Parks calls drones in its parks illegal without permission, which it rarely grants — Burges James Gadsden Park at Moberly Marsh among them.

Resort and private land. Kicking Horse Mountain Resort does not permit personal or recreational drones anywhere inside its ski-area boundary or village, so aerial work there starts with the resort's written agreement. The Skybridge, the lodges and Edelweiss Village are private too; their owners decide what is filmed.

Fire and winter roads. The Town's 2026 profile rates Golden and its surroundings high to extreme risk in the summer wildfire season. From 1 October to 30 April, British Columbia's winter tire and chain rules apply on the passes into town.

Questions about Golden & Kicking Horse, answered.

Can you fly a drone in Golden, BC?

In town and on the valley floor, with planning: Golden Municipal Airport's helicopter, skydiving and wildfire traffic, the hospital heliport and Mount 7's paragliders share that sky, and each site is checked before a date is set. Not in Yoho, Glacier, Kootenay or Banff national parks, not in BC provincial parks without rarely granted permission, and not at Kicking Horse without the resort's agreement.

Has Atom2Adam filmed in Golden?

Not yet. The studio's nearest published work is two aerial stories at Radium Hot Springs, 98 km south-east in a straight line, up the same Columbia River. They are shown on this page for the craft and captioned with their own place. Atom2Adam has no office, crew or client in Golden and claims none.

How far is Golden from Calgary for a shoot?

Tourism Golden puts the town 278 km and about 2 h 44 min from Calgary International Airport, on the Trans-Canada through Banff and Yoho national parks. A day shoot is possible, and early or late light usually means a night in town. From October to April the drive is planned around British Columbia's winter tire and chain rules.

When is the best time to film in Golden?

Mid-December to mid-April for snow, judging by Kicking Horse's 2025/26 season; the last two weeks of September for larches; mid-May to mid-September for the river, with the highest water in June and early July. Summer carries wildfire risk the Town rates high to extreme, so aerial days keep a second date in hand.

How is a Golden commission quoted?

By the commission, against a written brief. Creative direction, the shoot days and post-production make up the fee; travel from Calgary, accommodation and any local permits are billed at cost. No rates are published, because a lodge's hospitality film and a timber-frame listing set are different pieces of work.

The agency

Golden, on a global agency’s map.

Atom2Adam is a global creative consultancy and media agency. It advises on how a place, a brand or an experience should be seen — creative direction, visual strategy, campaign planning — and then makes the work: film, photography, aerial cinematography and post-production, finished for every screen it will live on. It operates from Calgary, Canada; the consultancy is delivered anywhere, and production travels on a client-funded basis.

Commissions travel. The consultancy — direction, strategy, references, the plan — needs no flight and is delivered anywhere. When production leaves the Calgary base, the client covers travel, accommodation, ground transport and local permits at cost; the fee covers the work.
