Columbia Valley · British Columbia, Canada
Film, photography and aerial in the Columbia Valley, BC.
Two lakes on the valley floor, hot springs at Radium and Fairmont, Panorama's 1,300 vertical metres on the Purcell side — and a second-home valley that Destination BC calls popular with affluent Albertans. Atom2Adam takes commissions across it, and two of its aerial stories were made here, at Radium Hot Springs.

Does Atom2Adam work in the Columbia Valley?
Yes. Atom2Adam, a global creative consultancy and media agency operating from Calgary, takes commissions across the Columbia Valley, BC — Invermere, Radium Hot Springs, Fairmont Hot Springs, Panorama, Windermere and Canal Flats. Two of its published aerial stories were made at Radium Hot Springs. British Columbia is routine for the studio: the crew drives in from Calgary, about three hours by Tourism Radium's count, and travel is billed at cost.

The valley's buyers live three hours away.
The Columbia Valley lies between the Purcell Mountains and the Canadian Rockies, with Columbia Lake, Lake Windermere and the Columbia Wetlands on its floor (Destination BC). Its economy runs primarily on recreation and tourism, and the growth in second homes has filled it with property managers, builders and real-estate firms — businesses that need a place shown well while its owner is somewhere else.
Much of that somewhere else is Calgary. Destination BC names Alberta residents, particularly from Calgary, as the valley's first key market; in late 2025 a Royal LePage broker told e-know that many of the area's recreational buyers still come from Calgary. At the 2021 census, 732 of Radium Hot Springs' 1,366 private dwellings — 53.6% — were not occupied by usual residents. A studio operating from Calgary films for owners who drive the same road.
Features have used the valley before: The Mountain Between Us filmed around Invermere and Panorama in January 2017, and All Night Wrong was shot entirely in the valley's front country, mostly in Radium Hot Springs. Two aerial stories on this site were made at Radium too — Fields and Forest over the Columbia Wetlands, Mountain and Forest over the valley wall — and they are the proof this page offers.
What a valley commission needs first.
- 04Aerial over lake and bench. Lakefront lots, golf routing and resort villages read properly only from above. Flights are planned site by site: central Invermere is a few hundred metres from the hospital heliport, Fairmont Hot Springs and Invermere both have aerodromes, and Kootenay National Park and the provincial parks are closed to drones — aerial cinematography, planned against each site's rules.
- 03Stills that sell from a distance. Rooms, decks, docks and the view from the deck, made for listings, short-term rentals and resort marketing. Royal LePage put the median single-family price in Invermere's recreational market at $775,000 for the first nine months of 2025; a listing at that level is judged on its pictures before anyone drives in. See architecture, interiors and hospitality photography.
- 02Films for seasons that sell. Panorama's 2026/27 season runs 4 December to 11 April, and the Columbia Valley Chamber of Commerce counts a golf season from about the end of March to the end of October. A resort or brand film is planned around the season it sells, then cut for every platform it will run on — brand, hospitality and property films.
- 01Direction before the drive. The brief, the references, the shot plan and the permissions to ask for — Canal Flats, BC Parks, ʔakisq̓nuk First Nation land — are settled before a vehicle leaves Calgary, so the days in the valley go on work already decided. That is the consultancy and creative direction.
- 05Finished away from the valley. Edit, colour, sound and finishing happen at the studio after the shoot, and the collection arrives digitally — which is how an owner in Calgary, or further away, receives the whole set without a second trip. The craft is post-production: edit, colour, sound and finishing.
Commissions the valley supports.
These follow what the Columbia Valley's economy and landscape are built on — not a record of past clients.
Resort seasons
Panorama's winter, the pools and lodge at Fairmont, Radium's summer: campaign films and stills cut for the season each one sells.
Lakefront and second homes
Frontage on Lake Windermere and Columbia Lake, Panorama's condos and townhomes, Windermere's second homes — photographed and flown for owners and listings.
Golf
Course routing, tee boxes against the ranges and clubhouse interiors, across a season the Chamber puts at late March to late October.
Short-term rentals
Listing sets for owners who rent between visits, made to sell a stay rather than a sale.
Tourism and events
Spring birding during Wings over the Rockies, 3–9 May 2027, and the Lake Windermere Whiteway when a cold winter freezes it — never promised to a fixed date.
Builders and property managers
Progress and completion sets for the construction and property-management firms the second-home market has grown.
Made at Radium Hot Springs.
Both stories were flown at Radium Hot Springs, inside this valley. Neither names a client or a date; each frame opens its full story.

The rise over the meadow.
Twenty-four seconds from Fields and Forest: the camera lifts from standing water in a wet meadow at Radium Hot Springs until the river's tree line, the hay fields and a farmstead on the bench share one frame. It is the valley floor this page describes, filmed by the studio; the full story carries the river, the railway and the forest above them.

Planning a Columbia Valley shoot.
Getting there. Tourism Radium puts the village about three hours' drive from Calgary. The usual road runs through Banff and down Highway 93 South, which crosses Kootenay National Park for 94 km with no cellular service. Parks Canada names Calgary as the nearest major airport, with connections to Cranbrook, 145 km south of Radium. The valley keeps Calgary's clock: from 1 November 2026 the Province says the East Kootenay stays aligned with Alberta on UTC−6 all year.
Light. At Invermere the astronomical day runs just under eight hours on 21 December and about sixteen and a half on 21 June (US Naval Observatory); the Purcells and the Rockies shorten direct sun on the valley floor at both ends. In August 2026 the Province issued a wildfire-smoke warning covering Invermere and Canal Flats, so late-summer aerial days keep a second date.
Airspace. Fairmont Hot Springs Airport (CYCZ) and Invermere's airstrip (CAA8) sit inside the valley, and central Invermere is a few hundred metres from the hospital heliport (CIV2). Each site is checked against them and against Transport Canada's rules before a date is confirmed; the studio flies under an Advanced RPAS certificate.
Parks and protected land. Radium Hot Springs is 2 km from the south-west entrance of Kootenay National Park, a no-drone zone where fines reach $25,000. BC Parks calls drone use without permission strictly illegal in its parks and says it rarely grants it. The Columbia Wetlands Wildlife Management Area, designated in 1996, is planned with the Province's conservation-lands office first.
Permits and land. Canal Flats' 2025 film guidelines ask for applications 14 business days ahead and $5 million in liability insurance. In Invermere and Radium, permission is arranged with each municipality directly. Almost the whole stretch between Windermere and Fairmont crosses ʔakisq̓nuk First Nation reserve land, where permission is the Nation's to give.
Winter roads. British Columbia requires drivers to obey winter tire and chain signs from 1 October to 30 April, so a ski-season shoot travels on winter-rated vehicles and carries margin for the passes between Calgary and the valley.
Questions about the Columbia Valley, answered.
Has Atom2Adam filmed in the Columbia Valley before?
Yes. Two published aerial stories were made at Radium Hot Springs: Fields and Forest, over the Columbia Wetlands, and Mountain and Forest, over the forested valley wall and the Rocky Mountain Trench. Neither names a client or a date. They are linked from this page as the studio's own work in the valley, and they are the whole of it so far.
Can you fly a drone over Lake Windermere or in Radium Hot Springs?
Often, with planning. Outside the parks the answer depends on the site: the Invermere hospital heliport and airstrip, Fairmont Hot Springs Airport, people below and the landowner's permission. Kootenay National Park, 2 km from Radium, is closed to drones, and BC Parks rarely permits them. Every address is checked before a shoot date is confirmed.
Is there an Atom2Adam office or crew in Invermere?
No. Atom2Adam has one operating base, Calgary. The consultancy — the brief, the references, the shot plan — is delivered remotely, and production drives in for the shoot; British Columbia is routine for the studio. No office, crew or client is claimed in the Columbia Valley, and none should be assumed from this page.
When is the best time of year to shoot in the Columbia Valley?
It depends on what is being sold. Panorama's 2026/27 season runs 4 December to 11 April; the Chamber puts golf from about the end of March to the end of October; lakes and docks read best in summer. Late summer carries wildfire-smoke risk — the Province issued a warning for Invermere in August 2026 — so aerial days keep a backup.
How is a Columbia Valley commission quoted?
By the commission, never the hour, against a written brief. The fee covers creative direction, the shoot days and post-production; travel from Calgary, accommodation and any local permits are billed at cost. No rates are published, because a lakefront listing set and a resort campaign film are not the same piece of work.
